THE SUBJECT: History of the Castle
For anyone who has seen Cardiff Castle they will know it is a dominant feature in the very centre of the capital city of Wales. Parts of the castle and grounds can be traced back to the 11th Century when the Norman invaders built a fort / bailey castle on top of a 3rd Century roman fort. Over the centuries further expansion of the castle took place until the mid 18th Century when the Castle passed into the Marquesses of Bute family. Following the death of the 4th Marquess of Bute in 1947 the castle was given to the City of Cardiff. It is now a major tourist attraction as well as hosting events and music concerts.
THE DRAWING: Artist’s Note
I spent many hours in the castle grounds trying to decide which would be the best view of the castle. I took dozens of photographs and ended up selecting the most iconic view, which was the view from the ramparts of the surrounding wall. The original drawing measures 67cm x 31.5cm (26½” x 12½”) which is currently too big to generate a full size intaglio plate (at the moment my access to printmaking facilities is very limited) but maybe one day…..!
I did most of the drawing work in my studio at home (due to the weather!) along with numerous to and froing to the castle to check on the details. Total drawing time was 92 hours, over a period of just 4 weeks..
