THE SUBJECT: History of the village of Castle Combe
The village was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 when there were just 33 households. It is believed that a castle existed from around the 12th century but, at some point it was demolished.. Over the centuries the village saw a surge in wool production with a number of wool mills in or around the village. By the 17th century the cloth industry had gone leaving the current houses where the weavers’ families lived. It is stated that no new properties have been built in Castle Combe since about the year 1600. It is now a major tourist area with thousands of visitors visiting each year.

THE DRAWING: Artist’s Note
This is a village known to me for many years before I first made a drawing of it. It is one of the largest drawings I have tackled at 63cm x 46 cm (25” x 16”) The drawing took approximately 150 hours of drawing work over a total period of 42 years. There is a full story about why it took 42 years which you can read in my STORIES page.
