LOCATION & HISTORY
Located next to the river Thames, Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, has been known, over many centuries, as the street where celebrities and influential people lived.. The majority of the properties were built in the early 18th century, but, notably, one of the most famous was the old Manor House which Henry VIII had built and was home to a number of his wifes during his reign. Another notable resident was the English artist, J M W Turner.

THE DRAWING: Artist’s Note
I have known Cheyne Walk for many years as I had a relative living nearby in Chelsea and I used to walk along and admire the beautiful properties. I then saw the John Varley watercolour and decided there was no better way than to copy his original! I completed the drawing in 1982 while in Saudi Arabia on a project. I could not find any available art quality paper so I used what I could. The result is that the paper browned somewhat, but into a delightful antique look which, I believe, seems to perfectly compliment the 1811 date of the artist’s view. It has always been one of my favorite drawings hence my reluctance to sell it over the decades. It took me around 45 hours to complete.
