THE BUILDING: History
Stokesay Castle was built in the 13th century but was added to and renovated many times over the years. The grand hall features the most magnificent 13th century wooden beamed ceiling. A gatehouse was added in the 17th century and the castle was fortunate in surviving the English civil war as it was ordered, by parliament, to be demolished in 1647 following the war. A beautiful castle and hall and well worth a visit.

THE DRAWING: Artist’s Note
I saw this castle on the train from mid-Wales to Cardiff many years ago and I was so impressed I returned there in the car to take a closer look. I took many photographs and then returned home and made a drawing of the outside of the castle as well as another drawing of the internal Great Hall. This was my first intaglio etching print and I think it came out well. I plan to follow the artist proof prints up with a small signed & numbered limited edition of intaglio prints. Total drawing time for the original drawing was about 55 hours.
